I just can't take any control tactics course seriously that spends time trying to teach advanced kicking techniques designed to be executed barefoot or in minimalist athletic shoes to police officers, security guards, or military personnel wearing 15-30 lbs. of equipment and heavy tread soles.
Throwing a roundhouse kick in combat boots is like trying to have sex through a snowsuit. There's friction, but it's not going to produce the desired result.
There is a popular saying that goes something like this: You are the hero of your own story. It's very inspiring...and also mostly bullshit.
Just being you doesn't make you a hero - heroic efforts define heroes - and if you're just an average Joe (or Jane) living your life, you're hardly a hero for that.
People all over the planet do that without the self-aggrandizing rhetoric that goes with patting yourself on the back for simply surviving another day in paradise. There has to be a little more to it than that, sorry.
Next time you wake up, set out to earn the title of hero. If your story isn't all that heroic, then you can hardly be the hero of it...and that means you're probably just an extra in some other person's tale while living out your days in mediocrity.
